The Great Climate Debate

In the 2009 “Who Killed Fusion” article preface I wrote “In June of 2009, the American House of Representatives passed the Cap and Trade HR2454 bill 219 by 211 votes. This has been tabled but still could become law. This Waxman-Markey bill effectively penalizes industrial companies including electrical power generators who release carbon dioxide and other “greenhouse gases” in excess of arbitrary thresholds and redistributes this penalty or “pollution tax” to similar companies operating substantially under the threshold.

The Congressional Budget Office states the cost of Cap and Trade to Americans is $175 per year per American household or in excess of $22 billion dollars annually by 2020.

In December of 2009, an international movement took shape in Copenhagen, Denmark to make the concept of Cap and Trade an international program. The United States and other countries agreed to "donate" $100 billion per year by 2020 to less developed countries to force the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by the industrialized countries.

Is this the best use of our money? Absolutely not. The strong and robust debate in the scientific community concerning the cause and effect relationship of climate change and man is inconclusive at best, and politically driven by a divergent set of rogue players at worst.

The preferred use of the enormous amounts of money being dissipated in climate change abatement is the direct and immediate investment in science and technology (atomic fusion) that will simply replace fossil fuels and ultimately nuclear fission. Under these conditions, climate change caused by man is a moot point and removed from serious discussion. Mankind will then have the benefit of unlimited, inexpensive energy, potable water, and plentiful food for eternity…”

That was written 5 years ago. Today it is important to understand the true nature of the AGW or climate change debate and its drivers. And it is imperative that we begin robust fusion program development efforts immediately well in advance of a much, much bigger…and very real problem…which is the depletion of economically viable fossil fuels, which, by the way, will correct climate change caused by man, on its own.

Fusion energy is the ultimate “green energy solution” to the extent green energy means energy produced without carbon dioxide and other gaseous emissions, no radioactivity, and chemical discharge. We cannot state with scientific certainty that anthropogenic global warming or man induced climate change is taking place. Nor can we state with scientific certainty it is not. But fusion energy is the means to eliminate this perceived threat and ensure the future of generations to come. Fusion is the only realistic means to produce material amounts of energy.

Furthermore fusion energy will provide the means to realistically extract Carbon Dioxide out of the atmosphere and convert it to liquid and gaseous fuels for the transportation industry.

And fusion energy will allow for the elimination of 60+ years of accumulated radioactive waste thus elimination the need for radioactive waste and storage facilities.

Climate Change Won’t Kill the Grandkids – Having No Energy Will

By: Tom D. Tamarkin April 15, 2016 Abstract AGW or climate change is not the big problem many claim. The perceived scare of AGW has been used by sub-groups in the United Nations to bluff wealthy industrialized nations into transferring money to poor often times corrupt nations. Monies gained from this mechanism have not been invested in the root cause ... Read More »

The CO2 Record in Plant Fossils

Plant fossils obtained from sedimentary rocks and peat deposits are a relatively new tool being used to unravel Earth’s carbon dioxide (CO2) history. Tiny pores on plant leaves and needles called stomata regulate carbon dioxide absorption and water vapor release. Stomata numbers decrease during times of high atmospheric CO2, and increase when atmospheric CO2 is low. Image courtesy of: UC ... Read More »

New paper finds strong evidence the Sun has controlled climate over the past 11,000 years, not CO2

Hockey Schtick Thursday, November 27, 2014 A paper published today in Journal of Atmospheric and Solar-Terrestrial Physics finds a “strong and stable correlation” between the millennial variations in sunspots and the temperature in Antarctica over the past 11,000 years. In stark contrast, the authors find no strong or stable correlation between temperature and CO2 over that same period. The authors ... Read More »
